Teaching the Letter C: Sounds and Recognition Tips
The letter C is a fun one to teach because it has two common sounds:
- The hard C sound /k/ as in cat, cookie, and carrot
- The soft C sound /s/ as in circle and city
For preschool, focus first on the hard C sound. Make a collection of small items or pictures with the /k/ sound and help your child say each one out loud. You can sort them into “C” and “not C” piles to practice auditory discrimination.
Use air-writing, tracing, or sensory materials like salt or sand to practice the shape of the letter. Talk about how uppercase C looks like a curve or open circle.
Hands-On Letter C Activity Ideas
Here are a few playful, hands-on ways to explore the letter C throughout your week:
- Build a C with Cars – Line up toy cars to form the letter shape
- Cereal Sorting – Sort different kinds of cereal (or just use Cheerios!) and form the letter C
- Play Car Wash – Wash plastic cars as part of a fun pretend play setup
- Cave Craft – Create a cave from a paper bag or box and add animals
- Chalk the C – Use sidewalk chalk to write big C’s outside
- Letter C Scavenger Hunt – Look for things around the house or outdoors that start with C
