Looking for a fun way to add some hands-on math to your Halloween activities? These Halloween Pattern Block Matsare a playful way for kids to explore shapes, geometry, and spatial reasoning while creating spooky Halloween pictures!

Kids can use colorful pattern blocks to build bats, spiders, haunted houses, and more. It’s a simple activity that combines math, creativity, and problem-solving without feeling like traditional math practice.

I’ve created a set of 30 printable Halloween pattern block mats featuring 10 different designs in three styles, so you can adapt the activity to different ages and skill levels.

Halloween Pattern Block Activities for Kids

Pattern blocks are one of my favorite hands-on math manipulatives. Children can use these colorful geometric shapes to create pictures, explore patterns, and discover how smaller shapes fit together to make larger designs.

These Halloween shape mats add a seasonal twist to that learning!

The printable collection includes these 10 Halloween pictures:

  • Bat
  • Coffin
  • Eyeball
  • Ghost
  • Haunted house
  • Spider
  • Spider web
  • Tombstone
  • Witch’s hat
  • Witch’s shoe

Each picture challenges children to look closely at shapes, their orientation, and how they fit together. Some designs are simpler, while others require more careful observation and problem-solving.

Three Ways to Use the Halloween Pattern Block Mats

One of my favorite things about this printable set is that each Halloween design comes in three different styles.

1. Full-Color Pattern Block Mats

These show children exactly where to place each colored pattern block. They’re a great starting point for younger learners or children who are new to using pattern blocks.

2. Outlined Pattern Block Templates

These printable mats show the individual shapes without the colors. Children must look at the outlines and figure out which pattern blocks fit into each space.

This adds another level of visual discrimination and shape recognition.

3. Shape Outline Challenges

These mats show only the outside outline of each Halloween picture, without the individual pattern block divisions.

Children must experiment with different combinations of pattern blocks to fill the shape. It’s a fun geometry challenge that encourages spatial reasoning, persistence, and creative problem-solving.

With 10 designs in three styles, there are 30 full-page printable mats altogether!

How to Use the Halloween Shape Mats

You’ll need:

Print the Halloween pattern block templates you want to use and provide children with a selection of pattern blocks.

Start with the full-color mats if children are still learning how to recognize and position the shapes. As they become more comfortable, introduce the outlined versions or the more challenging silhouette mats. Encourage children to rotate the blocks, compare different shapes, and experiment with ways to complete each picture.

For the outline-only challenges, there may be more than one way to fill a design. Let children explore their own solutions!

What Do Kids Learn with Pattern Blocks?

Although these Halloween pattern block activities feel like play, they’re full of opportunities for meaningful math learning.

  • Shape recognition: Children identify triangles, squares, rhombuses, trapezoids, and hexagons as they build their pictures.
  • Spatial reasoning: They practice rotating, positioning, and combining shapes to fit a particular space.
  • Geometry: Kids discover how smaller shapes can be combined to create larger shapes.
  • Problem-solving: More challenging mats encourage children to test ideas, make adjustments, and try different solutions.
  • Fine motor skills: Picking up and positioning the blocks gives little hands valuable practice with coordination and control.

Pattern blocks also provide a wonderful opportunity for math conversations. Ask children which shapes they used most often, how they solved a tricky section, or whether they could create the same picture in another way.

More Ways to Extend the Halloween Pattern Block Activity

Want to add even more math learning? Try these simple extensions:

  • Count the shapes: How many triangles, squares, or rhombuses did you use?
  • Make a graph: Graph the number of each shape used in a Halloween design.
  • Compare designs: Which picture used the most blocks? Which used the fewest?
  • Explore symmetry: Can you find a line of symmetry in any of the Halloween pictures?
  • Create your own: Challenge children to design an original Halloween picture using pattern blocks.

Older children can also explore how different combinations of blocks cover the same area, or compare the number of pieces used in different solutions.
