Kite Counting Activity for Preschool Math

This post may contain affiliate links.

Hands-on activities are one of the best ways for preschoolers to practice counting. This kite counting activity lets kids add colorful bead tails to kites while practicing number recognition and counting skills.

It’s a simple spring math activity that helps young learners build number sense while working on fine motor skills.

This activity also works well for a spring theme, weather unit, or a  letter K preschool theme!

Preschool Math- Kite Counting

Why Counting Activities Are Important for Preschoolers

Counting activities help preschoolers develop number recognition, one-to-one correspondence, and early math confidence. Hands-on activities like this kite counting game allow children to physically match objects to numbers, which strengthens their understanding of quantity. This is a great hands-on counting activity for preschool math centers.

Supplies for the Kite Counting Activity

You only need a few simple materials to put this activity together:

Print out of Kite Numbers
Pipe Cleaners
Pony Beads
Hole Punch
Laminator (optional, but recommended)

How to Set Up the Kite Counting Activity

Print the kite cards on cardstock. The printable includes both color and black-and-white versions.

Cut out the kite cards and use a hole punch to make holes where the small white circles are. Laminating the cards will help them last longer, especially if you plan to use them in a classroom or math center.

Cut the pipe cleaners in half and thread one piece through the hole on the kite. Twist it around to secure it in place so it becomes the kite tail.

Now the activity is ready for kids to use.

How to Play

Children choose a kite card and read the number on the kite. Then they slide the correct number of pony beads onto the pipe cleaner tail to match the number.

This activity helps kids practice:

• counting
• number recognition
• one-to-one correspondence
• fine motor skills

Younger children may need help with larger numbers, while older preschoolers can practice counting independently.

Pair It With a Kite Book

This activity is even more fun when paired with a kite-themed story.

Two favorites we have enjoyed are:

Kite Day: A Bear and Mole Story by Will Hillenbrand
Stuck by Oliver Jeffers
