Looking for a simple and meaningful way to teach kids good manners? One of our favorite tools for gentle character lessons has always been The Berenstain Bears.

These classic, family-friendly books are known for sharing important life lessons in a warm, relatable way. One story that has been especially helpful in our home is The Berenstain Bears’ Please and Thank You Book by Mike Berenstain.

Along with reading the story together, I created a free printable Please and Thank You copywork handwriting activity to help reinforce the lesson in a hands-on way. You can download it below!

A Classic Series with Meaningful Lessons

Stan and Jan Berenstain began writing The Berenstain Bears books in the 1960s, and the series has continued through the years with their son, Mike Berenstain. These books have stood the test of time because they address everyday childhood struggles — like sharing, responsibility, honesty, and manners — in a way kids truly understand.

In The Please and Thank You Book, the Bear family helps the cubs learn the importance of using polite words like please, thank you, and you’re welcome. The story shows how small words can make a big difference in how we treat others.

It’s a sweet and simple message, but one that kids really need to hear (and practice!) often.

Why This Book Is Great for Teaching Manners

This story works especially well for:

  • Toddlers and preschoolers learning basic social skills

  • Early elementary kids who need reminders about polite speech

  • Family read-aloud time

  • Classroom character education lessons

Because the story is short and engaging, it’s easy to read more than once — which is perfect when you’re trying to help kids build a new habit.

Please and Thank You Copywork Printable

To go along with the book, I made a simple two-page copywork printable.

Copywork is a gentle way to help kids practice:

  • handwriting

  • spelling

  • sentence structure

  • and important character words

What’s included:

Page 1:
Kids practice writing the words:

  • Please

  • Thank you

  • You’re welcome

Page 2:
Kids copy short sentences using those polite phrases in real-life situations.

This activity is perfect for:

  • morning work

  • quiet time

  • manners lessons

  • homeschool language arts

  • classroom centers

How We’ve Used This at Home

After reading the story, we talk about times we can use these words during the day:

  • asking for help

  • receiving a snack

  • playing with friends

  • talking to family members

Then the copywork helps reinforce the habit through writing. It’s amazing how something so small can help make politeness more automatic over time.
