Front and Back Dinosaur Flip Book

I have been wanting to make this Front and Back Dinosaur Flip Book for a really long time. I keep a huge running list of project ideas for my kids and my website, and this one has been sitting there waiting for the perfect time. I am excited to finally share it!
The idea came while visiting our local dinosaur museum. They had a hands-on build-a-dinosaur station where kids could mix and match different dinosaur parts. My children spent so much time playing with it, and I knew it would make a fun printable activity to recreate at home.
If your kids love dinosaurs, fossils, and prehistoric creatures, this flip book is a great way to combine learning and play.

Why Kids Love Dinosaur Activities
Most children go through a dinosaur phase at some point. Dinosaurs are fascinating because they were real animals that lived millions of years ago, yet they seem almost mythical. Activities that encourage children to learn dinosaur names, compare features, and explore prehistoric life help build curiosity and scientific thinking.
This dinosaur flip book lets kids learn about different dinosaurs while creating silly new combinations that spark imagination and creativity.
What Is a Dinosaur Flip Book?
A dinosaur flip book is a hands-on matching activity where children can flip the front and back halves of different dinosaurs independently.
Kids can:
- Match the correct dinosaur parts together
- Learn dinosaur names
- Compare body shapes and features
- Create silly mixed-up dinosaurs
- Invent entirely new prehistoric creatures
Because the pages flip separately, children stay engaged as they experiment with different combinations.
Educational Benefits of the Dinosaur Flip Book
This printable activity is much more than just a craft. It helps children practice a variety of important learning skills.
Children will work on:
- Visual discrimination
- Matching skills
- Reading dinosaur names
- Fine motor skills
- Problem-solving
- Observation
- Creativity and imagination
This activity also opens the door to learning about fossils, paleontology, habitats, and the incredible variety of dinosaurs that once lived on Earth.
Front and Back Dinosaur Flip Book
This dinosaur book has 12 different dinosaurs. They are cut down the center. You use them to assemble the flip book.
Watch it in action!
Meet the Dinosaurs in the Flip Book
One of the most fun parts of this dinosaur flip book is getting to learn about different dinosaurs while you play. Some were giant plant eaters, some were fierce predators, and a few weren’t actually dinosaurs at all—they were prehistoric reptiles that lived during the same time period!
Iguanodon
Iguanodon was one of the first dinosaurs ever discovered. This large plant eater could walk on both two legs and four legs and is famous for the large thumb spike on each hand. Scientists believe these spikes may have helped protect it from predators.
Saurolophus
Saurolophus was a duck-billed dinosaur with a distinctive crest on the back of its head. It traveled in herds and spent its days grazing on plants. Its unusual crest may have helped it communicate with other members of its group.
Ichthyosaurus
Ichthyosaurus was not actually a dinosaur. It was a marine reptile that lived in the ocean and looked a bit like a dolphin. It was a fast swimmer that hunted fish and squid in ancient seas.
Triceratops
Triceratops is one of the most recognizable dinosaurs ever discovered. It had three large horns and a huge bony frill around its neck. Even though it was a plant eater, it was well equipped to defend itself from predators.
Pterosaur
Pterosaurs were flying reptiles rather than true dinosaurs. They soared through the skies above the dinosaurs and came in many different sizes. Some had wingspans larger than a small airplane!
Tyrannosaurus Rex
Tyrannosaurus Rex was one of the largest meat-eating dinosaurs that ever lived. With powerful jaws and enormous teeth, T. rex sat at the top of the food chain. It remains one of the most popular dinosaurs with kids today.
Plesiosaurus
Plesiosaurus was another marine reptile that lived in the ocean. It had a long neck, paddle-like flippers, and spent its life swimming through prehistoric seas searching for fish and other prey.
Stegosaurus
Stegosaurus is famous for the large plates running down its back and the spikes on its tail. Although it looked intimidating, it was actually a peaceful plant eater that lived during the Jurassic Period.
Allosaurus
Allosaurus was one of the top predators of the Jurassic Period. It hunted large herbivores and had dozens of sharp teeth for tearing meat. Fossils of Allosaurus have been found right here in Utah!
Velociraptor
Velociraptor was much smaller than movies often show. In reality, it was about the size of a turkey and likely had feathers. Despite its small size, it was a fast and clever hunter.
Ankylosaurus
Ankylosaurus was covered in thick armor from head to tail. Its most impressive feature was the heavy club at the end of its tail, which it could swing to defend itself from predators.
Brachiosaurus
Brachiosaurus was one of the tallest dinosaurs ever discovered. Its long neck allowed it to reach leaves high in the treetops that other dinosaurs couldn’t access. Imagine a dinosaur as tall as a four-story building!
Are All of These Dinosaurs?
Here’s a fun dinosaur fact: not every creature in this flip book is technically a dinosaur! Ichthyosaurus, Plesiosaurus, and Pterosaurs were prehistoric reptiles that lived during the age of dinosaurs. They shared the same world but belonged to different groups of animals.
That makes this flip book even more fun because kids can learn about a variety of amazing prehistoric creatures while matching the front and back halves.

Cut each piece down the center, except for the front and back covers. These will keep the book stable.

Once they are all cut, you’ll want to mix up the pieces a bit so the book does not align perfectly as you turn the pages. This way kids can flip through trying to find the matches.

You won’t want to staple this one. Hole punch through the top of each side of the booklet, make sure to do it in a spot where you will not go through the heads of the dinosaurs. Add clasps to attach them together. If you don’t have any, use a pipe cleaner, a piece of ribbon or string, or whatever you have on hand.
Now it’s time for some fun. Find the dinosaur matches or make silly mixed up dinosaurs. We really liked the Sauro-saurus. It reminded us of a mythical animal- doesn’t it look like a mermaid?

The Ankylo-raptor is a good one, too!

My youngest spent more time finding the correct matches, but my son wanted to make silly dinosaurs.

What Is a Paleontologist?
A paleontologist is a scientist who studies fossils and ancient life.
By examining fossilized bones, footprints, eggs, and plants, paleontologists learn how dinosaurs lived millions of years ago. Many of the dinosaur facts we know today come from fossils discovered in rock layers around the world.

Extend the Learning
After assembling the dinosaur flip book, try some of these fun extension activities.
Dinosaur Research Project
Choose one dinosaur from the book and research:
- What it ate
- How large it grew
- Where it lived
- Whether it was a carnivore or herbivore
- Interesting facts about its fossils
Dinosaur Sorting Activity
Sort the dinosaurs into groups:
- Plant eaters
- Meat eaters
- Flying reptiles
- Marine reptiles
Create a New Dinosaur
Mix and match dinosaur parts to invent a completely new species.
Give it:
