Kids are naturally curious—and sometimes all it takes is one fascinating fact to get an entire conversation started!
These Did You Know? Conversation Starters for Kids are a little different from typical conversation cards. Instead of simply asking kids questions, each card begins with an interesting fact designed to make them stop, think, wonder, and talk.
Wait…really? How does that work? Why would that happen?
Those are exactly the kinds of questions I love hearing from kids.

Conversation Starters That Teach Kids Something, Too
A lot of conversation cards ask questions like What’s your favorite food? or Where would you like to travel? Those can be fun, but I wanted to create something a little different. Each of these cards gives kids an interesting piece of information to discuss.
You might learn something about an unusual animal adaptation, discover something surprising about the human body, or talk about why something happens in nature. And don’t stop after reading the fact!
Use each card as the beginning of a conversation:
- Why do you think that happens?
- Did you already know that?
- What does this make you wonder?
- What else would you like to know about it?
- How could we find out more?
That last question can even turn a five-minute conversation into a mini research project.

The Story Behind These Cards
I had some help creating this set from my teenage son, who was basically a walking encyclopedia.
His brain retained all kinds of random, fascinating facts, and I loved that about him! He had so much fun brainstorming ideas and testing them out on his younger brother.
He also helped me create our Animal Guessing Game, another fun activity for curious kids.

Ways to Use the Conversation Starter Cards
These are easy to pull out whenever you want to add a little conversation and curiosity to your day.
Try them:
- Around the dinner table
- During morning time
- In classroom morning meetings
- As brain breaks
- During homeschool
- On road trips
- At family gatherings
- In a classroom science center
- As writing prompts
- For early finishers
You could also put the cards in a jar and choose one Did You Know? fact of the day.
Turn Them Into Writing Prompts
These cards don’t have to be used only for conversation.
Have kids choose a card and write about it. They might explain what they learned, write down questions they still have, or research the subject and share another interesting fact.
You could even have older students decide whether the fact sounds believable and then verify it using a reliable source.
That’s a fantastic little media-literacy/research extension—and particularly appropriate for a resource built around interesting facts.
Encourage Curiosity
The real goal of these cards isn’t for kids to memorize 60 random facts.
It’s to get them curious.
One interesting fact can lead to questions, research, storytelling, science experiments, books, or an entire rabbit trail of learning.
And sometimes it can simply lead to a really good conversation around the dinner table.
Both outcomes are wins in my book.
