This month’s book club theme is “Where in the World?” I loved this topic because it could really go in so many different directions. My kids and I have been having so much fun with our topic, I decided to do a Famous Landmarks I Spy with Google Earth.
My ideas was sparked by a book I have called The Kids Fun Filled Search and Find Geography Book by Anthony Tallarico. (We found this used and it is apparently out of print because you can only buy used ones on Amazon.) My kids love search and find books and this one is great because it is also teaching them all about the world as they look for different things on the page. These kinds of books are great to keep kids occupied on a boring errand!
The book has sections from all parts of the world full of maps, fun facts and pictures to search for. It is sure to entertain your kids! 🙂 Mine have been enjoying it.
So, after playing around with this book, I thought it would be great to show my kids some of the famous landmarks around the world and help them become familiar with them. There is a Google Earth App of you can use it right from your computer. It is so amazing to explore it and to see all of the incredible sights from around the world up close on your screen. My kids and I couldn’t stop- we just kept thinking of more and more cool things to look at. The fun thing is that you can do 3-D tours of the outside of the building. You can also go to street view and see them from a standing viewpoint. Some of them even have real live shots of the buildings.
To expand on this even more, I created a 30 Famous Landmarks I Spy with Google Earth printable activity sheet. It has the name of the landmark, and when you type it in, it takes you to that place in the world and the kids can write in where in the world that landmark is. It is a fun way to get them to see the world!
