Homemade Sidewalk Chalk Paint

I made a fun concoction for my kids the other day to paint the driveway. I made homemade sidewalk chalk paint for them.  When I told them we were going to paint the driveway, they were instantly interested.  How often does Mom say that they can do something like that??

How to Make Homemade Sidewalk Chalk Paint:

Homemade sidewalk chalk paint is so easy to make!  You just need three things to get your kids busy painting your driveway!

Ingredients for Homemade Sidewalk Chalk Paint

how to make sidewalk chalk paint

Cornstarch (or flour works as well)
Water
Coloring- you can use liquid food coloring or liquid watercolor paints – We have done it both ways
Something to put the paints in- we used a mini muffin pan
Big paint brushes – foam ones work well

Mix together equal parts cornstarch and water.  When you first start mixing the water and cornstarch it is hard to mix, but give it a minute or two and it will start mixing.    (This is the same recipe to make Oobleck.  Have you tried that? )

Pour the sidewalk chalk paint into the muffin pan or other small containers for mixing the colors.

Once you have your paint divided out, mixing in your colors. We mixed a few colors.  You will need a lot of color for it to show up on the driveway or sidewalk where you are painting.

This paint needs to be remixed regularly to prevent separating.

My kids thought splatter painting would be cool.  They flicked their brushes to make some creative splatter designs!

Then they painted some pretty designs!

No worries, the paint washes off very easily with a hose or some rain!

Here is a picture of the first time we tried this project many years ago.   Notice the “I Love Mom” painted in there?  Guess it was a good project! 🙂
