Rhyming Words Dominoes

I really, really like dominoes. I am not sure what my obsession is with them, but they are just super cool (in my mind). We have played dominoes a lot in our house as a math game, but I decided they could be used in a more versatile way if you use the back side. I made a set of rhyming words dominoes for the kids and they are turning out to be a hit.
To make the rhyming words dominoes, you just need some dominoes, masking tape or painter’s tape and a marker. Simple? Yes. We have a really big set of dominoes, so I just used 30 of the tiles to make it. I covered the back with a piece of painter’s tape and trimmed it to fit. Then you just need to draw a line through the center with a marker.
Once the dominoes are ready, you can fill it with words. I chose rhyming sets of words and wrote 4 or five rhymes per set. Write the words on either side of the line. Do not put the same rhyme on one domino, make sure they are mixed up.
Then let the kids match up any rhymes they find and make a long chain of rhymes. If you have trouble fitting them all into one long chain, add a few more word tiles.
This is a very versatile game. You could easily do this with sight words, alphabet letters, spelling words, etc. If your kids have a list they need to learn, turn it into a domino game! They will thank you.
This looks like such a fun game! My kids will love playing this. Thank you for the great idea. I have scheduled this post to share on my facebook page.
Thanks, Deborah!
Dominoes….. I used the concept of ‘one digit more’ to teach adding. A four had to be matched to a five etc. Also used the ‘one digit less’.
Ooh! Great idea!
Fantastic idea! I’ll have to play this with my grandsons.
Great idea, I’ll be doing this for my youngest nephews birthday. I think he’ll love it (especially if I use the words “moo” and “poo”.
Haha! Yes! Moo & Poo would definitely bring some giggles. 🙂
