Looking for a simple, hands-on winter activity that encourages creativity and fine motor skills? This Snowflake Felt Board project is easy to make and provides endless open-ended play for preschool and early elementary kids. Children can explore shapes, patterns, and symmetry while building their own unique snowflakes!
How to Make a Snowflake Felt Board
You’ll Need:
-
A sturdy piece of cardboard or foam board (a recycled pizza box lid works great!)
-
Blue or gray felt (for the background)
-
White felt (for the snowflake pieces)
-
Hot glue gun or fabric glue
-
Scissors
-
Optional: printed snowflake templates or pattern cards for inspiration
Directions:
-
Cut your felt slightly larger than the cardboard square.
-
Hot glue the felt to the front, wrapping the edges around and gluing them to the back.
-
Print or draw a few snowflake pattern cards to guide younger learners. (I used these ones.)
-
Use the patterns to cut a variety of white felt pieces—arms, diamonds, circles, and other geometric shapes.
-
Store all the pieces together in a large zip bag for easy cleanup and reuse.
Kids can mix and match the shapes to design their own snowflakes on the board. The felt naturally sticks together, so no glue is needed!
Learning Benefits
This activity may look simple, but it builds several key skills:
-
Fine motor development: pinching and placing small felt pieces
-
Spatial awareness: understanding how shapes fit together
-
Symmetry and math concepts: exploring balance and pattern
-
Creativity: designing one-of-a-kind snowflakes
Montessori & Homeschool Connections
This project fits beautifully with Montessori-inspired learning and hands-on homeschool activities. Children can work independently to explore patterns, recreate real snowflake structures, or invent imaginative new ones.
Extension Ideas
-
Science Connection: Look at real snowflake photos under magnification and compare them to your felt designs.
-
Art Connection: Create watercolor snowflakes or paper cut-outs afterward.
-
Literacy Connection: Pair with a favorite winter book like The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats or Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs Martin.
