Winter Sensory Play: Snow Tea Party

Freshly fallen snow has a kind of magic to it — quiet, sparkling, and irresistible to kids. On one beautiful winter day, we took advantage of the snowy wonderland outside our door and created a Snow Tea Party. It turned into one of our favorite winter play memories!

Winter Play: Snow Tea Party

This activity pairs perfectly with one of our beloved picture books: The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats — a charming story that celebrates curiosity, discovery, and joyful winter play. My son plays just like Peter in the book, kicking through the snow and experimenting with every icy detail. We laughed reading it together, then set out to make our own snowy adventure.

How to Host a Snow Tea Party for Kids

A snow tea party is a simple outdoor activity that sparks pretend play, sensory fun, and winter exploration. Here’s what we used:

Supplies:

  • Plastic play dishes + cups

  • A pitcher filled with pink water “tea” (just water + food coloring)

  • Mini muffin tins for making “snow cupcakes” and “snow muffins”

  • Spray bottles filled with colored water

  • Outdoor picnic table or a snow-covered surface

  • Cozy snow clothes

Our backyard picnic table was covered with the perfect layer of snow — so we set the table just like a real tea party… but with everything made of snow!

Once I invited my kids outside, they squealed with excitement. They molded pretend foods out of snow, filled muffin trays with their snowy creations, and decorated everything using the colored spray bottles. The table soon turned into a festive winter feast — bright, imaginative, and wonderfully messy.

They played… and played… and played. That’s the magic of winter learning.

Why This Winter Activity Is So Good for Kids

A snow tea party is more than just fun — it’s also fantastic sensory and imaginative play:

✔ Builds fine motor skills (pouring, scooping, packing snow)
✔ Encourages creativity and storytelling
✔ Strengthens social skills during pretend play
✔ Provides valuable outdoor time — even in cold weather
✔ Engages multiple senses: touch, sight, sound, temperature
✔ Easy setup with materials you already have

Getting outside in winter boosts mood, reduces restlessness, and helps kids connect with nature all year long — not just in warm weather.

Tips for a Successful Snow Tea Party

  • Choose a day when the snow is fresh and packable

  • Dress warmly so kids can stay out longer

  • Use bright dishes and food coloring — the contrast pops in photos!

  • Bring a towel or tray outside for easy cleanup afterward

  • Add playful prompts: “What’s on the menu today?” or “Serve me your fanciest snow cupcake!”

Extend the Fun

Pair the activity with a cozy read-aloud of The Snowy Day and invite kids to reenact moments from the story. You can also encourage them to:

  • Look for footprints like Peter did

  • Paint designs in the snow

  • Build a miniature snowy city

  • Create snow prints with found objects

More Winter Activities for Kids

Winter doesn’t have to mean staying indoors.
With just a few simple supplies, a snowy backyard can become a world of imagination — one cup of “tea” at a time.

Bundle up, step outside, and enjoy the magic!
