The M&M Game – A Fun Icebreaker Game for Kids

The first days of school can feel exciting (and a little nerve-wracking) for kids. Icebreaker activities are a great way to help everyone relax, laugh, and start building connections.
One of my favorites is The M&M Game—a simple, colorful ice breaker activity that gets kids talking while having fun. It works for classrooms, homeschool groups, co-ops, youth groups, and even family game nights.

How to Play the M&M Game
You’ll need:
-
A bag of M&Ms (or any colorful candy—Skittles work too!)
-
The M&M Game color key (see printable below)
-
Small cup, bowl, baggies, or napkin for each player
Give Everyone Some M&Ms
Pass out 5–10 M&Ms to each player in a small bag or cup. Let them know they can’t eat them yet!
Explain the Color Key
Each M&M color represents a type of question to answer. For example:
-
Red – Share something you love to eat
-
Orange – Share your favorite hobby
-
Yellow – Share a place you’d love to visit
-
Green – Share something you’re good at
-
Blue – Share a favorite book or movie
-
Brown – Share something you did this summer
Take Turns Sharing
Sit in rows (speed dating style), or in a circle. Take turns answering the questions matching up with their candies.
Eat and Enjoy!
Once everyone has shared, let them enjoy their M&Ms.
