With the Olympics coming up, it’s the perfect time to explore where it all began! The ancient Greek Olympics were more than just athletic competitions — they were religious festivals, cultural celebrations, and a powerful way to unite the Greek city-states.

Learning about the history of the ancient Greek Olympics helps kids understand how the modern Olympic Games were inspired by traditions that began nearly 3,000 years ago.

In this post, we’ll explore:

  • The history of the ancient Olympics

  • How they compare to today’s games

  • Books about Greek myths and history

  • Hands-on Olympic crafts and activities

  • Ways to create your own “mini Olympics” at home or school

What Were the Ancient Greek Olympics?

The first recorded Olympic Games were held in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece. They were held in honor of Zeus, the king of the Greek gods.

The Games took place every four years, a time period called an Olympiad.

Greek city-states would send their best athletes to compete. Even if cities were at war, they agreed to pause fighting during the games in a special agreement called the Olympic Truce.

Who Could Compete?

Only freeborn Greek men were allowed to compete. Women were not allowed to participate or even attend the events (though there were separate games for women honoring the goddess Hera).

What Did Winners Receive?

Instead of medals, winners received a simple olive leaf crown, called a kotinos. But the real prize was honor and glory for their city-state.

Ancient Olympics vs. Modern Olympics

This is a great place to have kids compare past and present.

Ancient Olympics Modern Olympics
Held in Olympia, Greece Hosted by different countries
Only Greek men competed Athletes from all over the world
Events honored Zeus Secular international event
Olive leaf crowns Gold, silver, bronze medals
Fewer sports Hundreds of events

Ask kids:

  • Which version do you think is more fair?

  • Which traditions do we still keep today?

Events in the Ancient Greek Olympics

The ancient games included:

  • Running races

  • Long jump

  • Discus throw

  • Javelin throw

  • Wrestling

  • Boxing

  • Chariot racing

Many of these events still exist in modern track and field competitions.

Ancient Greek Olympic Crafts

Hands-on projects make history memorable!

Olympic Torch Craft

We made a fun and easy olympic torch craft. We pulled out a flashlight and some tissue paper. Cut the tissue paper into flame shapes and tape onto a piece of foil. Wrap the foil around the flashlight.  I tore a little hole in the spot where the switch is so it can be turned on and off. The kids LOVED playing with this. They ran down into the dark basement to try it out and had so much fun doing their own little torch run!

Olive Leaf Crowns

In ancient Greece, champions wore olive wreaths. We made our own using pipe cleaners and craft foam leaves. Quick, easy, and a big hit.

Our Mini Ancient Olympics

After learning about the games, we hosted our own mini Olympics inspired by ancient events.

We tried:

  • Javelin throw with straws

  • Discus throw with decorated paper plates

  • Long jump

  • Foot race

  • A snowy “bobsled” challenge for fun!

This was a great way to connect learning with movement and excitement.

It was really a fun day and the kids learned about the olympics and ancient Greece in the process.

Critical Thinking Questions

Add deeper learning by asking:

  • Why do you think the Greeks paused wars for the Olympics?

  • Why were the games held in honor of Zeus?

  • Why were only men allowed to compete?

  • How have the Olympics become more inclusive over time?

Why Teach Kids About the Ancient Olympics?

  • How sports can bring people together

  • How history influences modern life

It also makes today’s Olympics more meaningful when they see the connections across time.
