Teaching the Letter H: Sounds and Recognition
The letter H makes a breathy /h/ sound, like in hat, hop, or hug. Preschoolers love practicing this sound—it’s easy to say and fun to find.
Ideas for introducing the sound:
- Emphasize the /h/ sound in daily conversation
- Hunt for H objects around the house or classroom
- Practice tracing H in a tray of dry rice or flour
- Make a Letter H sensory bin with things like a toy horse, hammer, hairbrush, hat, or hands
For added fun, play a letter H scavenger hunt where kids find objects beginning with H, or sing the letter H song to reinforce the sound.

Preschool Letter H Craft: H is for Hair
This one gets big laughs—and big learning!
How to Make It:
- Print the uppercase H from the printable pack.
- Cut various lengths of yarn—long enough to make bangs or braids.
- Drizzle glue over the letter H.
- Press on the yarn to form wild or styled hair.
- Add a face underneath the letter for personality!
Extend the craft by letting kids style their H’s hair differently—curly, spiky, or fancy braids! You can even add googly eyes or draw accessories like bows or glasses.

Preschool Letter H Snack: H is for Honeycomb
We used Honeycomb cereal for this easy and educational snack.
Use the printable honeycomb mat (included in the Letter H Pack) and let your child fill in the hexagons with the cereal pieces. It doubles as a patterning and dexterity activity, while sneaking in a tasty treat!
Other Letter H snack ideas:
- Hamburgers (mini sliders!)
- Hot dogs
- Hummus with veggies
- Honey graham crackers
- Hard-boiled eggs (for a healthy snack twist)
You can also have a snack picnic where kids bring their favorite food that starts with H. It’s a great way to build vocabulary and encourage social interaction.
Letter H Week Highlights
One of our favorite activities this week was the H is for Hair craft. It sparked so much laughter and creativity! We had pigtails, mohawks, and even a rainbow yarn hairstyle.
The honeycomb snack mat was also a hit—not only fun but great fine motor practice. Reading The Little Red Hen and The Napping House helped tie in the letter H sounds and built new vocabulary naturally through storytime.
Themed weeks like this make early literacy a joy, and I love seeing the letter really come to life in our home. These types of activities don’t just teach the alphabet—they help foster a love of learning, imagination, and hands-on discovery.
