Creative Ways to Use Historical Figures Coloring Pages

Coloring pages can be so much more than a quiet activity! With a few simple additions, you can turn these historical figure coloring sheets into meaningful history lessons.

1. Create a Historical Figures Timeline

One of my favorite ways to help kids understand history is to create a timeline. It helps them see when important events happened and how different people and historical periods connect.

Have your children choose several figures from the coloring book and research when each person lived.

After coloring their pages, arrange them chronologically on a wall or bulletin board. You could even add important historical events between the pictures.

Ask questions such as:

  • Which of these people lived during the same time period?
  • Who lived the longest ago?
  • What important events happened during their lifetimes?
  • Did any of these people influence one another?

This is a wonderful way to practice chronological thinking and develop a better understanding of world history.

2. Research a Famous Historical Figure

Let each child choose someone from the coloring book to investigate more deeply.

They can use books, biographies, encyclopedias, or other reliable resources to discover more about that person’s life and accomplishments.

Here are a few research questions to get them started:

  • When and where was this person born?
  • What is this person most famous for?
  • What challenges did they face?
  • How did they influence history or society?
  • What is one interesting fact you learned?
  • Why do people still remember this person today?

Younger children can share what they learn orally, while older students can write a short biography or prepare a presentation.

3. Compare Two Influential People

Choose two people from the collection and compare their lives and contributions.

For example, students could compare Abraham Lincoln and Nelson Mandela, or Leonardo da Vinci and Pablo Picasso.

Use a Venn diagram to explore their similarities and differences. Consider where they lived, what they accomplished, the challenges they faced, and how they influenced others.

This is a great opportunity to practice critical thinking and compare people across different cultures and historical periods.

4. Make a Famous People History Notebook

Create a growing history notebook with the completed coloring pages!

After coloring each historical figure, have children add a short written summary, important dates, or a few interesting facts.

Organize the pages by time period, geographic region, or area of achievement.

Over time, students will build their own illustrated collection of historical biographies that they can look back on throughout the school year.

5. Discuss How People Influence History

Not everyone in history is remembered for the same reasons, and learning about famous people creates wonderful opportunities for discussion.

Ask your children what makes someone influential. Is it their leadership? Their discoveries? Their creativity? Their willingness to challenge established ideas?

You can also explore how historical figures are remembered differently by different groups of people.

Some people made lasting positive contributions while also holding beliefs or making decisions that deserve careful examination. Encourage older students to consider multiple perspectives and distinguish between a person’s accomplishments and the full historical context of their life.

History becomes much more meaningful when children learn to ask thoughtful questions rather than simply memorize names and dates.

What Ages Are These History Coloring Pages Best For?

I especially recommend these famous historical figures coloring pages for elementary students, approximately grades 2–6, although they can easily be adapted for younger or older learners.

For younger children, use the pages as an introduction to important people. Read a short biography aloud, discuss a few facts, and enjoy coloring together.

For upper elementary students, add timelines, geography connections, short written reports, or compare-and-contrast activities.

Middle school students can use the illustrations as part of more advanced biography research, historical analysis, or notebooking projects.

The activities work well for homeschool history lessons, elementary social studies, biography studies, classroom enrichment, and independent learning.
