Looking for a creative way to make math more fun for your kids? Whether you’re homeschooling or just looking for an engaging after-school activity, LEGO bricks are the perfect hands-on tool for math practice. And if you want to take it up a notch—add candy LEGO bricks for an edible twist kids will love!
Why Use LEGO Bricks for Math?
LEGO bricks are colorful, tactile, and naturally lend themselves to math concepts like addition, subtraction, multiplication, sorting, patterns, and more. Best of all, they’re something kids already want to play with—making it easy to sneak in a little learning without a fight.
Where to Find Candy LEGO Bricks
We first discovered candy building bricks in the bulk section at our local grocery store, but you can also find them online. They’re stackable and come in a variety of sizes—perfect for building AND learning. Bonus? The reward for solving the math problem is eating the answer!

I’ve created a simple 2-page LEGO Math printable to help you get started:
-
Addition & Subtraction Practice – Use candy or regular bricks to build simple equations. Kids can physically “add” or “take away” bricks and write the equation.
-
LEGO Mosaic Grid – Great for symmetry, counting, and creative design. Kids can use this page to make colorful patterns, designs, or solve visual math prompts.

Edible LEGO Math Ideas (Using Candy Bricks)
-
Brick Equation Challenges: Lay out a number of candy bricks and ask your child to create a math equation that equals a given number.
-
Sweet Subtraction: Start with a full plate of bricks. Ask a subtraction problem and remove (aka “eat”) the correct number!
-
Color-Coded Math: Assign a value to each brick color and have kids build equations based on colors instead of numbers.
-
Guess the Total: Build a candy LEGO tower and have your child count the total number of bricks or guess and then check.

Regular LEGO Math Activities
No candy? No problem! Here are plenty of ways to use regular LEGO bricks for math learning:
1. Brick Value Addition
Assign each LEGO brick a value based on the number of studs (the bumps on top). For example:
-
2-stud brick = 2
-
4-stud brick = 4
Have kids build towers with a target number in mind. Example: “Can you make a tower that equals 10?”
2. Skip Counting Towers
Use bricks to practice skip counting by 2s, 5s, or 10s. Build a tower with one color per count set.
3. Measuring with Bricks
Use LEGO bricks as a non-standard unit of measurement. “How many LEGO bricks tall is your toy dinosaur?”
4. Fractions with Bricks
Use different sized bricks to show part-to-whole relationships. For example, show that two 2-stud bricks equal one 4-stud brick.
5. Greater Than / Less Than
Give your child two small piles of bricks and ask them to compare the totals. Use a printed or handmade > and < sign.
6. Sorting & Graphing
Sort LEGO bricks by color or size and then create a simple bar graph with them. Kids can record their results on paper or with the printable.
Tips for Success
-
Keep it low pressure—make it a game!
-
Mix in creative play between math challenges to avoid burnout.
-
Let kids design their own problems after a few guided ones—they often come up with great ideas!

Math doesn’t have to be boring. With LEGO bricks (especially the edible kind), learning becomes a hands-on, multi-sensory adventure. Whether you’re practicing basic addition or building complex equations, LEGO math is a hit every time.
So go ahead—dump out those bricks or open that candy bag. It’s time to build, learn, and snack your way through math!
This is a re-post of one of the oldest posts on my site. Here’s a picture of how I originally did it with my kids. You can write it out & do it yourself, too! Also, don’t be limited by single bricks in your math problems!

How YUMMY! Thanks for linking up at Math Monday! 🙂

Neat idea!
I LOVE this idea, Karyn! My son will too. Thanks for sharing!
My kids would LOVE this!! Thank you for sharing over at the Week 4 Smart Summer Challenge linky!!
What a cute idea! My son would love that.
Oh I love that-wish we had those here!
Edible Lego? How bizarre! That obviously hasn’t reached Australia yet! But what a cool way of using it.
I have never seen edible legos – how fun! I wonder if they don’t sell them in Colorado?
I have never seen this candy, but I must get some. My son and I just did subtraction problems and he was wanting to add everything. Eating makes it disappear and this really might work! (I mean, we were doing math two minutes ago, literally!) Great idea.
