Why Gross Halloween Food is So Much Fun
-
Encourages adventurous eating
-
Makes Halloween parties unforgettable
-
Engages kids in cooking and creativity
-
Sparks lots of laughter and excitement
Food that looks a little “off” but tastes amazing is always a Halloween hit!

Gross Halloween Party Food Recipes
Jelly Worms in Dirt
Ingredients:
-
2 large packages red Jell-O (we used raspberry)
-
2 cups boiling water
-
¾ cup cold water
-
1 cup cream (or coconut cream for dairy-free)
-
100 bendy plastic straws
-
1 large jar or empty juice carton
-
1 package Oreo cookies

Instructions:
-
Dissolve Jell-O packets in boiling water. Stir in cold water and let cool to room temperature.
-
Add the cream and mix well.
-
Bundle straws with a rubber band (tip: wrap the bundle in plastic wrap to make removal easier) and place upright in a tall container.

-
Carefully pour Jell-O mixture into the straws, filling them completely.
-
Chill for 2–3 hours.

-
Meanwhile, pulse Oreo cookies in a food processor to create “dirt.”
-
To remove worms, run straws under warm water and gently squeeze them out.
-
Serve the worms over the Oreo dirt!

Tips:
-
If the worms are fragile, chill longer before removing.
-
You can substitute with gummy worms for a quick shortcut, but the homemade ones look eerily real!
Frog Eggs (Chia Pudding)
Ingredients:
-
4 Tbsp chia seeds
-
1 cup milk (we used coconut milk)
-
2 Tbsp honey, maple syrup, or agave nectar
-
1 tsp vanilla extract
-
Fresh rosemary for garnish (optional)

Instructions:
-
Stir together chia seeds, milk, sweetener, and vanilla in a bowl or jar.
-
Refrigerate for 3–4 hours until it forms a gel.
-
Serve in small jars or bowls, topped with a sprig of rosemary for that swampy vibe.

Educational Tip:
This also doubles as a simple edible science experiment about absorption!

Edible Cockroaches
Ingredients:
-
Dried dates
-
Pull & Peel licorice
-
Nut butter or cream cheese (optional filling)

Instructions:
-
Slice dates open and remove pits.
-
Fill with nut butter or cream cheese if desired.
-
Use a toothpick to poke 3 holes on each side.
-
Cut licorice into short pieces and stick them into the holes to create legs.
Fun Fact:
Dates are naturally sticky and sweet — once kids get over the “cockroach” idea, they usually love them!

Easy peasy and oh so tasty! Â (I am a little obsessed with dates.)

Educational Twist: Real Gross Foods Around the World
One thing I loved about The Gross Cookbook was learning about real foods eaten worldwide that Americans might find surprising, like:
-
Chewy caterpillars in Africa
-
Fish eyeballs in some Asian cuisines
-
Durian, the “stinky fruit” from Southeast Asia
This could lead into a fun cultural discussion or a food adventure day!
The frogs and bugs pictured are from our life cycle sets. These were just our fun added touch.

What fun and gross food. We used to do that kind of thing when the kids were younger. Now, they are teens and much more interested in making crazy costumes to walk in the Halloween parade.
