Homemade Wooden Tic Tac Toe Board

Tic Tac Toe is a fun game that everyone can play.  My kids love playing it.  I thought it would be fun to make a wooden tic tac toe board to set up in our yard.  That way they can play it all the time!

I recently got to review a set of tools from MakerX that we used to create this board. These tools are amazing and I highly recommend them for all kinds of crafting projects you may be doing.

This Worx set came with the following 5 tools:

MAKERX Hub with a 20V 2Ah Power Share battery, Rotary Tool, Mini Heat Gun, Air Brush, Wood & Metal Crafter, Angle Grinder, accessory case, carry bag, and 41 accessories.

Supplies Needed to Make the Tic Tac Toe Game

Wood- large piece for the game board

Smaller pieces for the squares

Acrylic paints- variety of colors

MakerX Tool Set (or other tools)

Waterproof Sealant

How to Make the Homemade Tic Tac Toe Game Board:

Watch how we made it & learn more about the tools in this video:

This set is all made from scrap pieces of wood we had around the house. We used a large piece of wood for the base that we cut to a big square.

We used the MakerX angle grinding tool to sand and smooth the edges of the wood.

My son is REALLY into tools, so he wanted in on the action, too!  These tools are safe enough to allow kids to help with your supervision.

Then I painted the whole board with white paint. Let it fully dry for a day or two before moving on to the next step.

I taped off the game board to paint the lines on it. I used masking tape for this. Make sure to measure them out so you get even, centered lines and rows.

Then I painted the lines of the tic tac toe board a fun contrasting color. Let the paint dry completely before removing the tape.

How to Make the X’s and O’s for the Tic Tac Toe Board

Cut smaller squares the same size (or just a little smaller) as your squares on the board that you painted. These will be the X’s and O’s for your board.  We sanded the edges of squares with the angle grinding tool, too.

To make the X’s & O’s, we printed out a letter template in a style we liked. I just found a good font and made it really big, then printed it to match the size of the square. Next, just trace it with pencil onto the the wooden square.  We made 5 X’s & 5 O’s so there are plenty to play the game!

We carved the letters with the wood crafter tool. This thing is awesome!

Paint your X’s and O’s with colors of your choice using acrylic paints. We went for fun & bright colors.

Once everything is dry, it’s a good idea to add a waterproof sealant to your project to make it more durable. This especially is a good idea if you are planning on having it as a yard game.

This project was so much fun to make with my kids. They learned some valuable skills about woodworking and crafting. But also we have great memories of making something really neat together!  We keep this on a table on our back porch and the kids play with it often with their friends.

How to Play Tic Tac Toe

Tic Tac Toe is a simple game to play. It has a 9 square grid. Each player is either playing X’s or O’s. They take turns placing their piece in one of the squares with the goal to get three in a row. If nobody gets three in a row, the game ends and you try again!
