Learning about the butterfly life cycle is such a fun early nature science activity for kids. There are so many creative ways to learn about life cycles. I have posted a few over the years with different animals and plants. See links to some of those at the bottom of this post. Today I have a Monarch Butterfly Life Cycle Mobile craft to share with you. This is a SUPER simple activity to put together and do with kids, and it shows all of the stages of metamorphosis for the butterfly.
The Monarch Butterfly Life Cycle
There are 4 basic stages to the butterfly life cycle: eggs, caterpillar, chrysalis, and butterfly. The chrysalis has several stages within it that I represented on the cards for this stage so kids can learn how it looks through the process.
Our favorite way to learn about the butterfly life cycle is through raising our own! We have done this a few times over the years. You can order a Butterfly Garden made by Insect Lore and they send you live caterpillars. It is such a magical process to watch! I highly recommend doing this with your kids.
How to Make the Monarch Butterfly Life Cycle Mobile
This is a fun and easy craft to put together.
I have a printable file you can download with all of the images included. Along with that you will also need a paper plate, yarn, scissors and glue.
Cut the paper plate in half and glue the large butterfly onto the plate.
Cut out each of the squares with the life cycles stages on them and punch a hole on the top of each one. Punch four holes evenly spaced along the bottom of the paper plate. Cut four pieces of yarn and attach the life cycle stages in order along the bottom of the plate.
Once all of the pieces are attached, punch two holes on the top of the plate to attach a string for hanging.
