I am really excited about this cute Squirmy Syllable Words Sort activity.  This activity combines insect and bug names with the skill of learning syllables.

A little back story about this idea.  About 10 years ago, I had my two oldest kids in a little music class called Let’s Play Music.  We loved those classes.  As I was pondering an activity combining bugs and insects with language arts, I suddenly remember a little activity we did in those classes to learn the rhythm of notes.  Each type of note was assigned a bug.  (Bug, beetle, butterfly, caterpillar)  It was the cutest thing!  So that’s where this idea came from.

Watch How We Played It:

This syllable sort is so fun for little ones learning about syllables.  We have been working on it in my daughter’s language arts lessons for a little while now, so this was a perfect practice activity for her.

This activity comes with a mat divided into four sections: 1 syllable, 2 syllables, 3 syllables and 4 syllables.  Also included are 20 insect syllable words cards with different bugs and squirmy critters that have 1-4 syllables. (I know they are not all technically insects!!)

How to Use the Squirmy Syllable Words Sort

To use this activity, cut out the insect syllable words cards and make a pile or spread them around the mat.  Let your kids choose a card and say its name. Clap the number of syllables to help them recognize how many syllables are in each word. Then help them place it in the correct square on the mat. It’s easy to do and lots of fun to say the different bug words. Some of them may be new to them, so it’s a great opportunity to learn about some new insects and bugs!
