What Are Mad Libs?

Mad Libs is a word game invented in the late 1950s by American comedy writers Roger Price and Leonard Stern. They noticed that inserting random words into a story produced hilarious results. Players ask each other for different parts of speech—nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs— without revealing the story’s context. When the words are placed into the blank spaces, they create silly, unpredictable narratives that often bring about fits of giggles. They have proved to be a long-lasting success and kids today still love them!

Why Use Valentine’s Day Mad Libs?

They’re Simple to Set Up

You don’t need fancy materials—just a printed Mad Libs template or a digital version of the fill in the blank stories and some pencils. Gather your group, pick your parts of speech, and let the fun begin.

Perfect for Classroom or Home

  • Classroom: Valentine Mad Libs printables are a great resource to reinforce grammar and vocabulary. Whether you’re teaching in-person or virtually, they’re a breeze to distribute and complete.USe them for your school parties, or as a bonus activity for a language arts lesson.
  • Home: They’re the perfect activity to entertain children (and grown-ups!) during a Valentine’s Day get-together, as a fun family activity, or in a homeschool.

Sparks Creativity and Collaboration

Kids practice coming up with off-the-wall words to fill in the blanks. In a classroom setting, have them brainstorm in small groups. At home, let each family member contribute a couple of words before revealing the story out loud.

Engaging and Educational

Mad Libs are more than just fun—they help children identify parts of speech, improve their reading comprehension, and build vocabulary. Plus, kids don’t even realize they’re learning because they’re having such a good time!

How to Use Valentine’s Day Mad Libs

  • Choose a Mad Libs Story
Pick one of the five Valentine-themed Mad Libs from my printable set. Each has a unique storyline, such as “The Perfect Valentine’s Day Card” or “Cupid’s Valentine Mission.”
  • Gather Materials: Print the mad libs, grab some writing utensils and a partner to complete it with. Grab my download below!
  • Fill in the Blanks: nstruct players to provide examples of parts of speech—nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.—without revealing the full story. For example, you might say, “Give me an adjective,” “Name a place,” or “Tell me an exciting verb that ends in -ing.” If you’re doing this with a group, each person can contribute a word.
  • Read the Result: Once all the blanks are filled, read the Valentine Mad Lib story aloud to the class or family. The sillier the words, the louder the laughter will be!
  • Reflect or Extend: For an educational twist, ask kids to identify the parts of speech they used or to define words they don’t know.

Educational Benefits

  • Grammar Skills
Children learn to differentiate between adjectives, nouns, verbs, and other parts of speech when choosing words to fill in the blanks. If kids are new to the parts of speech, give them a parts of speech list to help them!
  • Vocabulary Expansion
Mad Libs encourage kids to think of new words or synonyms, boosting their vocabulary in a playful context.
  • Reading Comprehension
After completing the Mad Lib, kids read the story—often multiple times—reinforcing reading fluency.
  • Listening Skills
When players call out the parts of speech, others must listen carefully to provide relevant words.
  • Creative Thinking
Coming up with quirky, offbeat words adds a creative edge that goes beyond typical worksheets or standard vocabulary lists.
