Fun Printable Summer Mad Libs for Kids

It’s summer time!  And today I have a set of printable Summer Mad Libs for you. This printable is for kids of all ages!  But they are especially great for young learners and young readers.

We are excited for the warm sunshine, the more relaxed days and lots of play!  However, I still love to give my kids some activities to keep their minds turning in the summer.  Although, we do take a break from structured learning, keeping kids engaged and learning during the summer months is essential in my mind. Printable Summer Mad Libs are the perfect combo of fun and learning during summer vacation. And, they are fun for students of all ages and even for the whole family! 

What Are Mad Libs?

Mad Libs are classic interactive stories or a fill in the blank word game where certain words are left blank for the players to fill in. The blanks are categorized by parts of speech such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Once all the blanks are filled, the story is read aloud, usually resulting in a silly and nonsensical story that entertains everyone.  The original Mad Libs have been around for a long time and were created by Roger Price and Leonard Stern. These free printable mad libs are based on those originals. 

 Benefits & Uses of Mad Libs for Kids

• Build Vocabulary and Grammar Skills:  Since Mad Libs require children to understand and identify different parts of speech, they really are educational. These silly stories help them practice grammar skills and helps expand their vocabulary as they choose words to fit the blank. This makes them great way to make language arts lessons more engaging. 
• Encourage Creative Thinking: The crazy stories that result from Mad Libs really encourage kids to think creatively. They have the freedom to come up with the wildest words.
• Strengthen Reading Comprehension:  As children read through their finished Mad Libs stories, they practice their reading comprehension. They learn to follow a storyline and understand how different words can change the meaning of a sentence. 
• Great for Group Activities: Mad Libs are perfect for group activities, whether it’s with family at home, at a summer camp, or during a party. They encourage collaboration and can be a fun way for kids to bond over shared laughter. Take turns reading the silly results  out loud. The sillier the story, the better! They can make for some memorable moments!

• Extend the Lesson: Turn the Mad Libs activity into a mini-lesson by discussing the parts of speech beforehand. You can even create a quick reference guide with examples of nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs to help kids. This can really help reluctant learners to build their language skills. 

Summer Mad Libs Printable

This printable pdf set includes six different fill-in mad libs stories!  The summer-themed stories are about the first day of summer break, a family campout, a Fourth of July parade, a backyard neighborhood party, a family road trip, and a day at the beach.  

This summer themed Mad Libs printable would be good to add into lesson plans for a sub plan. Use them as a homework assignment.  They could also be a great end of the school year activity as school is coming to a close.  They are also a fun summer break activity for kids. Summer Mad Libs would even be a great summer school activity!  Another idea is to use them on the first day of school as they come back from summer vacation.  Do you teach speech therapy or English?
