Do you have energetic kids who need to move? Keeping busy bodies happy and engaged—especially indoors—can be a challenge. But with a few simple, low-cost activities, you can turn your home into a fun, active play zone that encourages movement, coordination, and creativity.

active play ideas for kids

This post shares some of our favorite active play ideas that are perfect for toddlers, preschoolers, and even older kids. These games use common household materials and are quick to set up—perfect for rainy days, cold weather, or anytime your kids need to burn off energy.

Swat the Fly Game

What You Need:

How to Play: Draw a big fly on the paper plate and tie it to a string. One child runs while dragging the plate behind them. The other child chases and tries to “swat the fly” with a pool noodle. Great for giggles and exercise!

Hoop Target Toss

What You Need:

How to Play: Hang a hula hoop from the ceiling or a doorway using string or tape. Place a basket behind it and challenge your kids to throw balls through the hoop and into the basket. This is great for hand-eye coordination and gross motor skills!

Easy Punching Ball

What You Need:

  • Balloon or lightweight ball

  • Old pair of pantyhose

  • Tape or ceiling hook

How to Play: Place the ball or balloon inside the pantyhose and tie it closed. Then tie the feet of the pantyhose together and hang it from the ceiling. Let your kids punch, kick, and swing at it! It’s like a homemade punching bag and works wonders for burning energy.

More Creative Active Play Ideas

Want more ways to keep your kids moving? Try these indoor-friendly ideas:

1. Animal Races

Have your kids move like different animals: hop like a frog, crawl like a bear, slither like a snake, or waddle like a penguin.

2. Obstacle Course

Use cushions, chairs, boxes, and tape to create a simple indoor course. Add crawling, hopping, balancing, or tossing challenges.

3. Balloon Volleyball

Clear a space, blow up a balloon, and use your hands or a pool noodle to bat it back and forth. Try not to let it touch the ground!

4. Freeze Dance

Play music and dance around—then freeze when the music stops! This works for all ages and helps with listening skills, too.

5. Yoga for Kids

Introduce a few simple yoga poses (like tree, cat/cow, and downward dog). Great for calming energy and improving flexibility.

The Benefits of Active Play

Active play isn’t just fun—it’s essential for healthy development. It supports the whole child—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Here’s how:

  • Improves motor skills: Jumping, running, crawling, and balancing strengthen coordination and body awareness.

  • Boosts brain development: Movement helps improve focus, memory, and problem-solving skills.

  • Encourages social interaction: Group games build teamwork, communication, and emotional intelligence.

  • Supports emotional regulation: Physical activity helps kids release stress, reduce anxiety, and build confidence.

  • Promotes better sleep: Kids who move more during the day tend to sleep more soundly at night.

  • Develops lifelong habits: Kids who love to move are more likely to stay active as they grow.

And best of all—it gives kids an outlet for all that energy!
