Paint Chip Word Families: A Hands-On Phonics Activity

Build phonics and word-building skills with a colorful DIY literacy tool!
Paint chip word families are a clever and creative way to help kids explore rhyming patterns, phonics, and word-building. Inspired by a friend’s idea, this activity has become one of our favorite hands-on tools for reinforcing reading readiness and early spelling.
What Are Paint Chip Word Families?
Using colorful paint chip strips from the hardware store, you can create a fun word-building tool that helps kids discover how beginning sounds combine with common word endings (also called word families or phonograms).
You’ll need:
- Long paint strips (13+ with multiple shades for base words)
- Paint chips or strips with a square cut-out window (34+)
- A square hole punch (if your paint chips don’t already have cutouts)
Write the word family endings (like -at, -op, -ig) on the long paint chips, and write beginning consonants, blends, and digraphs on the cut-out cards. As kids slide the cards over the paint strip, they reveal new words—some real, some silly!

Most Common Word Families to Use
You can use any combination of the 37 most common word families or mix in others for variety. Here are a few great ones to start with:
- -at: cat, bat, sat
- -an: man, fan, pan
- -op: hop, mop, top
- -ig: pig, wig, dig
- -en: ten, pen, men
- -it: sit, kit, bit
- -ake: cake, make, rake
- -uck: duck, luck, truck

Letters, Blends & Digraphs to Include
Add variety and challenge by including:
- Single consonants: b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, r, s, t, w, y, z
- Blends: bl, cl, fl, gr, pl, tr, sl, sn, sp, st
- Digraphs: ch, sh, th, wh, ph
Challenge your kids to try out different combinations and sort the results into real and silly words—or write the new words they discover in a journal!

Great Idea,heres another.Go to Home Depot and get the MICKEY MOUSE color shapes and sperate them for ho many students you have and clip them together and there you have an color wheel that will go with each student.
