Edible Witches Brew Slime: Gross Halloween Science

Looking for a Halloween activity that’s equal parts gross, gooey, and deliciously weird? Make a batch of Edible Witches Brew Slime!

This creepy green slime is made from melted gummy bears, then filled with candy eyeballs, gummy body parts, or whatever other strange candy ingredients you’d like to toss into your witches’ brew.

It looks wonderfully disgusting—but it’s completely edible!

We originally made this Halloween slime after reading Room on the Broom, so it also makes a fun hands-on activity to pair with the story.

And while you’re stirring up your witches’ brew, you can sneak in a little science about gelatin, temperature, and changes in matter, too.

Edible Witches Brew Slime Ingredients

You’ll need:

• Green & yellow Gummy Bears
• Gummy Body Parts or other Halloween gummy candies
• Candy Eye Balls
• Microwave-safe bowl
• Spoon
• Cooking spray

The amount of gummy bears doesn’t need to be exact. Just use enough to make the amount of slime you want.

You can customize your witches’ brew with other edible Halloween candies, too. Candy corn, gummy worms, gummy skeletons, or other creepy candies would all be fun.

How to Make Edible Halloween Slime

Place the green and yellow gummy bears in a microwave-safe bowl.

Microwave for about 30 seconds, then stir. Continue heating in short intervals as needed until the gummy bears are melted and can be stirred together smoothly.

Be careful—the melted candy can become very hot. An adult should handle the heating and stirring, and the slime should cool before kids touch or taste it.

Let the melted gummy mixture cool for several minutes.

Then comes the best part. Add your candy eyeballs, gummy body parts, or other creepy ingredients and stir them into your witches’ brew.

And yes, saying…

“Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble…”

…while stirring is clearly an essential part of the recipe.

How to Keep Gummy Bear Slime From Sticking

Here’s your warning: gummy bear slime is STICKY. Very sticky.

Lightly coat your hands and your play surface with cooking spray before touching it. This helps keep the melted gummy mixture from sticking to absolutely everything.

As the slime cools, you’ll also notice that its texture changes. It becomes thicker and firmer than it was immediately after melting.

That leads to some fun science!

The Science Behind Gummy Bear Slime

Gummy bears get their chewy texture largely from gelatin, along with sugar and other ingredients.

Gelatin is made of protein molecules that can form a network that traps water. That network helps give gummy candy its familiar soft-but-solid texture.

When you heat the gummy bears, that structure is disrupted and the candy softens and melts.

As the mixture cools, the gelatin begins forming a network again and the witches’ brew becomes thicker and firmer. Have kids observe the slime at different temperatures.

Ask:

• How does it feel when it’s warm?
• What happens as it cools?
• Does it stretch differently?
• Does it become easier or harder to stir?

This makes your gross Halloween slime a simple experiment with temperature and changes in material properties.

Turn It Into a Halloween Science Experiment

Want to take the science a little further?

Save a small amount of the witches’ brew and observe it at different times.

Compare it:

• Right after melting
• After 5 minutes
• After 10 minutes
• After it has completely cooled

Kids can predict what will happen and then record what they observe.

Try describing the slime using words such as: runny, sticky, stretchy, thick, soft, firm, warm, cool

For older kids, talk about which changes happen because of temperature and whether heating the mixture again changes its texture.

A Room on the Broom Activity

Read the story together and then make your own bubbling witches’ brew afterward.

You could even let kids invent their own silly potion recipes:

3 candy eyeballs
2 gummy worms
1 gummy hand
A handful of melted green gummy bears

What would their potion do?

It’s an easy way to extend the activity into storytelling and creative writing.

Is This Slime Really Edible?

Yes, the ingredients are edible—but I think of this primarily as an edible sensory and science activity, rather than a bowl of candy meant to be eaten by the spoonful.

Use clean hands and surfaces if kids will taste it, check all candy labels for allergens or dietary restrictions, and supervise children around the hot melted candy.

And, of course, don’t use small candies with children for whom they would present a choking hazard.
