What Are CVC Words?

CVC stands for the Consonant-Vowel-Consonant pattern in a word. They are simple three-letter words that are spelled with a consonant a vowel and a consonant, in that order. They are all simple words that are perfect for teaching and practicing reading. These are the words you’ll find in the easy reader books, like Bob Books along with a few simple sight words and high frequency words.

What are CVCC words?  CVCC words are consonant-vowel-consonant-consonant.  They are more complex words than the regular CVC words. These words are a little longer and would be a next step after kids understand a basic CVC word pattern.

Some examples of CVCC words are:

pink, hunt, fast, milk, want, duck

Examples of CVC words:

cab, bad, bag, can, man, tag, sip, ten, net, den, mop, mom, fox, jog, bun, cub, bug, etc.

Want some fun ways to teach and practice CVC words with your kids or students?  I have been putting together a few different CVC spelling and reading activities to use in your teaching lately.

You can find a blog post for each of the cvc word families and short vowel sounds here:

Each of these printable worksheet sets come with fill in the blank CVC word games and puzzles with real words.  There are picture clues to help them figure out what the word is, and blanks for them to spell it. You can also help them (if they are new to this skill) by filling in some of the letters and have them find the missing letter.  This will teach them both reading skills and spelling skills! They would be great to use in literacy centers in your classroom.

Teach Reading With CVC Words

I have a kindergarten-aged daughter learning to read, so this has been a big focus around our home lately. CVC words are a great way to help beginning readers learn to read the English language. I love it when kids finally learn the sounds of the letters and can start putting those sounds together to read words! It’s exciting for kids as well.

I am teaching my fourth child to read now. It’s a fun and exciting time in a child’s life. I think it is really important to teach reading in a gentle way so kids can find a love of reading in the process.

It’s easy to lose your patience in the process of teaching a child to read. But we need to remember that it is new and difficult and does not yet come naturally to them.

Since it can sometimes be hard to think of a variety of words to use in teaching your young readers, I put together a printable CVC word list for all of you!

When teaching kids to read, the first step is learning the letters and their sounds. When teaching phonics skills, we have a set of flashcards with the individual letters and all of their sounds on the back. I review them with my daughter a couple of times a week. It’s important for kids to learn all of the letter sounds.

However, the short vowel sounds are the first ones that kids learn, and CVC words are all short vowel words making it easy for kids to read them. They are short words and easy to sound out once they know their letter sounds. CVC words are good first words for beginning readers.

CVC words are easy to build with letter tiles or letter flash cards. You can really do a lot of fun activities with them when teaching kids to read. Kids love sounding out silly words or nonsense words, too. Put together some words that are easy to sound out and have them tell you if it is a real word or a nonsense words.

See my post on 100 FUN Spelling Activities. Many of these use CVC words or could be adapted to use them. Use my CVC words list to give you inspiration on these activities.
