Learning to Read with Food

Learning to read with food is a pretty fun reading activity that we have loved doing!  Let me tell you more. I know you have always wanted to know exactly what we eat at our house.  Here is your chance.  🙂

Learning to read with food packages

I have a little one learning to read.  She also really loves food, so this was a perfect project for us.  (We always tease her because her initials spell the word EAT!)

This project is perfect for those at the very beginning phase of learning to read. Young kids that know their letters and letter sounds will love this activity.

How to Do This Learning to Read with Food Boxes Project:

Learning to read with food boxes is surprisingly fun for young kids.  They recognize different foods that they may eat regularly.  And, they will want to know the words on the package. As your family finishes eating different foods, save the package. You’ll want to use packages that your child will recognize. You don’t need to save the whole box, just cut off the front of the package.

It will take a little while to save up boxes for this project, unless you want to just raid your pantry and empty everything out of their containers.

Once you have a good amount of food boxes saved, you can assemble them into a book.  Just hole punch them on the side and tie with some yarn- or metal binder rings.

What I love about this little read with food book is that it gets my daughter excited to practice reading.  She calls out what the food is, then we go searching for that word on the page.  Sometimes it isn’t even on the box- like Graham crackers just say Honey Grahams, so we talk about what words we did find on there.  She is “reading” her book very well now.

  1. My daughter loves to try to read the words on her cereal boxes! Never thought to make them into a book 🙂 Thanks for linking up to Fun Stuff Fridays on Toys In The Dryer!

  2. You are so creative Karyn. I love how many activities that you create for your children where you think outside of the box (or in this case outside of the cereal box, LOL). I have pinned this onto my Pinterest Board. Thank you for linking up this week to my Enchanted Thursdays Blog Hop.
