Shrunken Head Apples- Halloween Science

How To Make Apple Shrunken Heads:

Peel the apples.

Peeling apples for shrunken heads

Carve a face into the apples. The more defined it is the better it will show up later.  We used a small paring knife for our faces.

My boys did the outside ones and mine is the middle one.

Carving Apple Heads

Prepare a large bowl of water with 2 Tablespoons of lemon juice and 1/2 c. salt mixed in.

Once the faces are carved into your apples, put them into the bowl of water and soak for 24 hours. This preserves the apples and also keeps them from browning.

After you soak them. bake them in an oven preheated to 200 degrees F. Bake them for 3 hours.  Cool them down.

Use a jumbo paper clip, bend it partially straight and insert it into the middle of the apple. Bend it over on the bottom so it stays in.  Tie a string to it and hang it in a cool, dry place for 2 weeks! During this time they shrivel up and get really creepy and gross looking.
