Fun Hands-On Spelling Activities
Here are some of our favorite ways to practice spelling words and sight words:

Spelling Paper Dolls
Make learning creative with paper dolls!
Cut out simple paper dolls and create outfits for them. Write spelling words on the clothing so kids can read and practice the words while they play.
A great activity for creative and visual learners.
Sight Word Twister
Turn spelling practice into a full-body activity!
Write spelling or sight words on cards and tape them onto a Twister board. Play like normal—but kids must read the word when they place their hand or foot on it.
This is a huge hit with active kids!

Beaded Spelling Words
Use alphabet beads and pipe cleaners to build words.
Kids can string letters together to form spelling words. This hands-on activity also strengthens fine motor skills.
Perfect for younger learners and repeated practice.

Stamp Your Spelling Words
Use alphabet stamps and an ink pad to spell words.
Instead of writing with a pencil, kids stamp each letter to build their words. It feels like play but still reinforces spelling skills.
A great option for kids who don’t love writing.

Glitter Spelling Words
Add a sensory element to spelling practice!
Write spelling words in glue and sprinkle glitter over them. This makes learning more memorable (and a little messy—but fun!).
Best for kids who enjoy art and tactile activities.

Eat Your Words
Use alphabet cookies or crackers to spell words.
Kids build their spelling words and then get to eat them! This is always a favorite and adds a fun reward element.
Great for younger kids and picky learners.

More Fun Hands-On Spelling Activities
Salt Tray Spelling
Pour a thin layer of salt (or sugar) onto a tray and have kids write their spelling words with their finger.
This is a great sensory activity and perfect for early learners.
Build Words with LEGO Bricks
Write letters on LEGO bricks or use pre-labeled ones and have kids build their spelling words.
Great for hands-on learners and kids who love building.
Drive and Spell
Write spelling words on paper and let kids “drive” a toy car over each letter as they say it.
Perfect for younger kids who need movement. Check out my race car alphabet post
Fly Swatter Spelling
Write words on sticky notes and place them on the wall. Call out a word and have kids swat the correct one.
Active, fast-paced, and super fun!
Rainbow Writing
Write each spelling word multiple times using different colors.
Helps with memory and makes repetition more engaging.
Ice Cube Spelling
Freeze small letter beads or paper letters in ice cubes and let kids melt them to build words.
Fun sensory twist (great for summer learning!)
Sock Toss Spelling
Write letters or words on cups or cards and have kids toss a sock or beanbag onto the correct one.
Adds movement + coordination
Puzzle Word Match
Write words on index cards and cut them into puzzle pieces. Kids have to put them back together.
Great for recognition and problem-solving.
Say It, Clap It, Spell It
Have kids:
- Say the word
- Clap each letter
- Spell it out loud
Great auditory + kinesthetic combo
Hide and Seek Words
Hide word cards around the room and have kids find and read them. Turns spelling into a game.
