I have another fun addition to my CVC word series to share with you today — this time focusing on Short O Words! These printable CVC word spelling mats and puzzles are perfect for beginning readers, especially in kindergarten or first grade.
If you’re just getting started with CVC words, this is part of a growing series of short vowel packs:
What Are CVC Words?
CVC stands for Consonant – Vowel – Consonant. These are three-letter words that are ideal for beginning readers because they can be sounded out easily.
Examples of short o CVC words include: dog, hop, log, top, box, pot.
CVC words are:

Great for practicing letter sounds and blending
Why Use Short Vowels in Early Reading?
Short vowels are the first set of vowel sounds typically introduced in phonics programs. When kids know their letter sounds, they can easily begin to decode and read CVC words with short vowel patterns.
The Short Vowel Rule:
One-syllable words with a single vowel in the middle usually have a short vowel sound, such as in hop, pot,or dog.
These CVC words are a great next step after alphabet work and help transition children into full reading fluency.
