St. Patrick’s Day is just a few days away and I really wanted to bring you some fun new content for you to use with your little learners! I made a new printable Story of St. Patrick book with pictures to color.

As someone of Irish ancestry, I have always loved this holiday. Â But it has evolved over time. My mom tells me stories of growing up that only the Catholics wore green on St. Patricks Day. Everyone else wore a different color, particularly orange. It’s definitely not that way here anymore!
There are many legends and myths about St. Patrick’s Day and what it is all about. Some of the myths are about clovers and shamrocks, finding a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, four-leaf clovers bringing good luck, some myths are about snakes and others are about leprechauns!

It is celebrated on March 17th each year and is a religious Christian holiday. This special day is celebrated with many types of St. Patrick’s Day activities. Â In Irish culture, it is a religious holiday and a feast day.
In the United States, we take our own spin! Â There are St. Patrick’s Day parades, people wear green (and get pinched if they don’t), they turn the Chicago river green! Â Many people traditionally eat corned beef and cabbage, and drink green beer. Â They use green food coloring to dye their food. Â They eat Lucky Charms or rainbow pancakes for breakfast. Â You will see people doing Irish dance, giving out chocolate coins, setting a leprechaun trap, and some are even making up stories of silly leprechauns wreaking havoc in their homes.

The Story of St. Patrick:
St. Patrick is a well-known figure in Christianity and is considered to be the patron saint of Ireland. He was born in Great Britain, in England during the first millennium. Patrick’s father was a deacon and in a high social station. Â As a teenager, Patrick was captured by Irish raiders or pirates robbing his family’s estate. While he was in captivity, he was forced to work tending sheep.

Saint Patrick prayed many times each day during his period of slavery. He had a dream about the ship and the sailors on which he would escape. Patrick was able to escape back to his home in England (after a bit of a detour to France). He went on to became a priest and a bishop.
After some time, he was visited by an angel and told to go back to Ireland as a missionary. He went back to serve a mission and teach the people about Christianity. He built churches and brought the gospel to many through his love and service to the people! Late in his live he retired to the village of Saul in Northern Ireland. He was never formally canonized as a saint in the Catholic church, but has since become one, likely due to his popular acclaim.
You can learn more about St. Patrick’s story in his book, Confessio (also titled The Confession of St. Patrick)

Legends & Myths
There is a legend that there are no snakes in Ireland because St. Patrick drove them all into the ocean by beating a drum.
Another legend talks about St. Patrick teaching about the holy trinity by using a clover. The three leaves on the clover represent the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
It is also said that St. Patrick created the symbol of the Celtic cross by combining the Christian cross with the pagan symbol of the sun. He wanted to teach the people the Christ was supreme.
