What Are CVC Words?
CVC stands for Consonant – Vowel – Consonant.
These are simple three-letter, one-syllable words that early readers can easily sound out using letter sounds.
Examples of short u CVC words include: cup, sun, bug, cut, gum, tub.
They’re a great confidence booster for new readers and form the foundation for decoding, blending, and fluency.
Why Start with Short Vowels?
Short vowel sounds are typically taught early in reading instruction, and CVC words are the perfect entry point into reading success.
The Short Vowel Rule:
One-syllable words with a single vowel between consonants usually have a short vowel sound — such as in cub, rug, or sun.
