Making History Fun~ Ancient History

If you are looking for some ideas for making history fun, read on!  I have some fun-hands-on activities to engage your kids in learning.

We have been having so much fun with our history curriculum this year.  We are learning ancient history. I am focusing everything around history and it’s been great so far.  I am loving the way everything ties in together.  The kids are just soaking it all in.

How We are Making History Fun

We make a library trip at the beginning of the week, and I prepare ahead to find books that go along with what we are studying that week. It really helps to have plenty of books that relate to what you are studying.  My kids LOVE history.

I have mentioned before that we are using the Story of the World- vol.1 Ancient Times.  So far we have read the first five chapters and have gotten through ancient Egypt.  I thought I would share some of the ways we are making history fun at our house!

We built a pyramid out of Legos.  Legos are essential in out homeschool!
Learn about a few more ways we have learned with LEGO:

We wrote our names in Hieroglyphics.

We made ancient weapons out of stone and sticks- didn’t have any leather straps to bind it- but the yarn was a great substitute.

We are making our own Ancient History timeline- just starting this one, so no pictures yet, but there are so many great options online for making your own timelines.

We are also creating a lapbook that covers the whole Story of the World vol.1.  I am also just getting this put together- just discovered this amazing free resource, with a video to teach you how.

Ancient History Books we have enjoyed the past few weeks:

How to Be an Egyptian Princess, Jacqueline Morely
The Prince Who Knew His Fate, Lisa Manniche
Egyptian Cinderella, Shirley Climo
Mummies Made in Egypt, Aliki
The Usborne Time Traveler, Judy Hindley
The Time Travelers Handbook, Lottie Stride
Egyptian Myths, Jacqueline Morley

And many more that I can’t remember…  We checked out 45 books last week.  I am a little obsessed about books, as are my kids.

Hope this inspires you in some way!  How are you making history fun at your house?

  1. Katie, I don’t think it would be too young for them. If you get the activity guide to go along with it, there are some great resources that are geared towards older kids, plus we supplement with lots of books, and you can choose the level of those. My son is 7 and he is loving it.

  2. Hi Karyn, Thanks for linking up at the Story of the World blog roll. These are some fun activities you’ve done. Amazing that lots of activities can be put together simply with things we might already have, such as lego, stones and sticks, and a roll of paper! Have a great homeschooling year, from Victoria
