What Happens Next?
Gently shake the bottle. Watch closely as the iron filings begin to move. They will gather around the magnet, forming curved lines and patterns. These lines show the shape of the magnetic field.
You will notice that the filings cluster most strongly near the poles of the magnet, where the magnetic field is strongest. It looks almost like the magnet is alive.
